After a strong showing in Week 1, Memphis fell flat in Week 2 — as predicted. While there was no reason to think Birmingham wouldn’t cover the spread against the Showboats, no one could have predicted the embarrassment that ensued with the Stallions routing Memphis 42-2.

As for the Gamblers, they are trending in the right direction; after losing by 16 to the Panthers in Week 1, they managed to only lose by 7 in Week 2 against the Breakers. While Houston’s play has not been impressive, things look worse than they are, as they have a tough schedule to open the season.

This is a great matchup, as it’s still unclear what should be expected of this Memphis squad. Their game against Philadelphia was not as close as the score indicated, but they are better than they looked last week. Both teams have something to prove, as neither wants to enter Week 4 without a win, so bettors can expect a tight one today.

Houston is the home team, but the game will take place in Memphis. The Showboats should come out pissed today, and while an outright win should be in their future, the points offer nice insurance.

Memphis +4.5 (-105)

As for the total, we have seen no consistency in either teams play to be able to make a smart play. Bettors should steer clear.

Pittsburgh Maulers @ Philadelphia Stars

The winless Maulers take on the Stars, who are coming off a 10-24 loss against the Michigan Panthers. After making it to the Championship Game last season, there were high hopes for this Philly team, but they have been shaky to open up the 2023 season.

The Stars played a tight game in Week 1 and were embarrassed in Week 2. They are fortunate to have the opportunity to right the ship today as they take on the whipping boy of the USFL.

The Maulers had a weak performance to open the season against the New Orleans Breakers, but they looked horrid last week against the New Jersey Generals. The three points they managed should have been the lowest of Week 2, but luckily the Showboats had two to pad the bottom of the barrel.

Everyone will be looking forward to playing the Maulers, and they will be hard-pressed to find a win this season. Vegas does not seem to think Pittsburgh is as bad as everyone else does, so a spread that is less than a touchdown is a great look this week.

Philadelphia -6.5 (-110)
Under 42.5 (-110)
