The early reports for the Bruins had Ullmark as the starting goalie which ended up not being the case, and ended up being a huge contributor to the miss in that game. Swayman is not the answer.
Flyers got it done as expected, easily covering as the dog. I’ll likely be fading the Avs big time for a while as MacKinnon left the game with injury, leaving Rantanen as the only remaining big dog in that line up for the foreseeable future.
9 Games on the slate tonight with plenty to choose from, let’s get into it.
St. Louis Blues (+150) @ NY Islanders (-175)
Barring anything crazy, I don’t see how the Blues get a win here. It’s game 2 of a back to back, with their back up goalie in, while facing the hottest goalie in the league in his home barn. None of that points toward the Blues. Griess will likely be in net since the lunatic got the start last night. Albeit a small sample size, Griess averages almost 4 GAA on the road. The Islanders average over 37 shots in their last 5 home stands so he should see plenty of volume.
In the opposing net will be Ilya Sorokin who has been an absolute wall this year. On home ice he averages 1.67 GAA and a .951 SV%, only allowing more than 2 goals in 2 of his 9 games at UBS Arena. This is hands down my favorite play of the night, all things point to a nice Islanders win.
NY Islanders -1.5 (+150)
Ilya Sorokin Under 2.5 Goals Against (-145)
Columbus Blue Jackets (+230) @ Pittsburgh Penguins (-275)
Everyone put on your shocked faces, I’m talking about the Penguins again. The Pens are dealing with some illness as of late. Crosby and Geno must have been Lady and the Tramp-ing it, as they both missed Mondays practice. Like all the great ones, they’ll push through it and light up Elvis in net.
In his 3 away starts, Elvis Merzlikins has yes to win a game, allowing an average of 5.75 GAA in that time, letting in 15% of shots faced. That’s not a good sign when facing a Penguins team that has shot 36 times per game in their last 5 at home. Columbus averages 4 goals against on the road, across the entire season, and I don’t see that changing tonight, even if Sid and Geno are still puking.
Elvis Merzlikins Over 3.5 Goals Against (-120)
Florida Panthers (-115) @ Winnipeg Jets (-105)
I liked this one a smidge more when the Jets were +105 this morning but there’s nothing wrong with -105. Either way we have a goaltending match up for the ages tonight. Hellebuyck and Knight have been playing incredible as of light, with Knight slowly taking the starting job away from Bob. Between the two, Hellebuyck has impressed me more and the reason I’m on the Jets side tonight.
Allowing only 1.38 goals a game on home ice, Hellebuyck has 3 shut outs in his 10 appearances, sporting a .957 SV%. While he has always been good, these numbers are unreal. The Panthers will be without Barkov still, who is hands down their best player. While they have other weapons they don’t play the same without him as he is one of the best two way centerman in the league.
