MLB Best Bets – 5/30/23

Pirates @ Giants

The Pirates are almost through with their short stint on the West Coast. Pittsburgh dropped two of three in Seattle, and now they are down one in their three-game set with the Giants. However, they shouldn’t have any trouble turning things around with Johan Oviedo on the mound today.

Oviedo had a couple of bad starts at the end of April that jacked up his ERA, but he’s been far more consistent of late. Oviedo has allowed five total runs over his last three starts. Seeing that he has turned things around makes the Pirates a fantastic look on the moneyline.

This pick is bolstered by the fact that the Giants are having a bullpen game. San Fran is starting John Brebbia, who has started but has never pitched more than two innings. So the Giants will be looking for seven innings from one of the worst pens in baseball.

Pittsburgh (+125)

Nationals @ Dodgers

The Washington Nationals continue their series with LA tonight. They will try for a better showing today after taking a 1 – 6 beatdown last night.

On the mound will be Jake Irvin for the Nationals and Tony Gonsolin for the Dodgers. Gonsolin has been a stud this season, and while he had a late start to the year, it gives bettors optimal time to lock him in for NL Cy Young (+8000). It’s certainly a long shot, but if he continues to pitch as he has, those odds will quickly drop.

Half of Gonsolin’s starts have been shutouts, and he has allowed three runs or less in the other half of his games. Taking on Washington today, he should be in for another superior start. While the Nationals strike out less than almost any team in the league, Gonsolin’s number should continue to impress.
