Illinois Online Gambling

The latest on Illinois online gambling, sports betting, lottery, and more.

Illinois is already one of the leading gambling jurisdictions in the United States. And expect even more gambling options in 2023 in the Prairie State. That includes the arrival of two new sportsbooks — Circa and Fanatics.

Online casinos in Illinois are not yet legal, but there’s a chance that could change in 2023. There are now several bills to legalize Illinois online casinos in the Illinois General Assembly.

Currently, there are 12 land-based casinos in Illinois, including the newest The Temporary by American Place in Waukegan. And at least four more casinos are coming — including a Bally’s mega casino in Chicago. Later this summer, a temporary Bally’s casino is expected to open in Chicago’s Medinah Temple. Also, the Golden Nugget Danville is expected to open soon. Beyond casinos, many other Illinois online gambling options exist in the Land of Lincoln. These include: sports betting, video gaming terminals, lottery and horse racing.

Bill SB 690 adds online and retail sports betting to this list. Gov. JB Pritzker signed this bill in June 2019. The licensing process is under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Gaming Board. The first batch of sportsbooks went live starting in May 2020.

This bill allows for six more retail casinos in Illinois, including one in Chicago. The number of gambling machines in the state will also increase.

Will online casinos open in Illinois, too?

The only options for online casino games are the nationwide sites that operate legally in the state under sweepstakes gambling laws. Brands include Chumba Casino and LuckyLand Slots.
