MLB Best Bets – 6/17/23

Reds @ Astros

The Cincinnati Reds are in Houston for some interleague play. There were edged out by the Astros last night 2-1, so they’re hopeful they can grab the second game of this three-game set.

Both teams sit in second place in their respective divisions, it’s been completely unexpected season for both these teams — just for different reasons.

The Reds have transformed from what they were last season. After being one of the worst teams in every major category, they have stepped up this year. They’re not winning games with power, but with speed ands strong atbats. They’re fifth in the league in triples and base on balls, and second in stolen bases.

This style of play goes outside of what’s popular in today’s game, but it’s certainly working for this club.

There’s been a change of pace in the National League East, as both the Giants and the Dodgers are chasing the Arizona Diamondbacks for first place. It’s a tight race, but no one expected the standings to look like this.

LA took the first game of the series last night to hold their spot three games back; the Giants will look to take tonight’s game to create a rubber match for tomorrow.

On the bump for the Giants is former Dodger Alex Wood. Wood was roughed up in his last outing against Pittsburgh, but prior to that, he was doing great work.

Going for LA is Bobby Miller; every season, the Dodgers pull some phenom pitcher out of thin air. Miller has made four starts and allowed two total runs. It will be a long night if the Giants can’t break him.
